FAQs

Here are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. Do you have another inquiry not listed here? Contact us at ZatiesBooks (at) gmail.com.

Q: Don't you feel bad about destroying books?!
A: We actually do not destroy books; we simply remove the covers. The pages remain in tact and are either recycled or re-bound in a coordinating fabric to create a complete gift set. Listen, we love books, too, and are very careful to never harm rare or extremely valuable volumes. The majority of our handbags are made from damaged or discarded books, most found in attics or garage sales. We rescue them from the trash and recycle them into new treasures.

Q: Where do you get your books?
A: The majority of our handbags are made from damaged or discarded books, most found in attics or garage sales. We also scour used sections of local bookstores and the freebie shelves of public libraries. Some books also come from customers!

Q: Do you treat the books with anything special to make them stronger?
A: With the exception of pre-embossed and glossy covers, we consistently apply a clear sealant to all our books. This encourages water resistance and prevents excessive wear. We also reinforce the spines for additional strength and durability.

Q: Why are some items priced higher than others?
A: While we try to keep our standard pricing on our bags, it simply isn't always feasible. Prices vary based on the size, age and condition of the book used as well as the fabrics, handles and any other embellishments. The bigger the book, the more expensive. The more hardware and adornments, the more expensive. Every piece that makes your bag completely unique requires a greater investment from us ... and provides a greater reward for you.

Q: Do you take special orders?
A: YES! Custom orders are our specialty. Do you have a book you would like used to make a uniquely personal handbag? A favorite title or author? Email us! We'd love to put something together for you.

Q: How long will it take you to make my custom order?
A: We offer a 2-3 week turn-around (plus shipping times) for custom orders, though, some items may take longer if the book or other materials are particularly difficult to find.

Q: What are your shipping policies and costs?
A: All orders for existing inventory (NOT custom orders) are shipped Priority Mail within 2 business days of receiving payment. Delivery times depend on the location, but generally extend 3-5 days. Shipping and handling costs are as follows:
  • Within the United States or to Canada = $5 for the first item; $3.50 for each additional item
  • Anywhere else = $9 for the first item; $6 for each additional item
Please note that gift sets, though priced as one item, qualify as shipping a 1st and 2nd item.
